Digging through Memories

The illustration captures a story two ladies travelling to Ottawa, overseeing the Parliament Hills beyond the balconies of the Canadian Museum of History. For this project, I returned to old photo albums in search for the perfect scene evoking the essence of nostalgia and youth. To portray the themes of old memories, I developed a narrative driven by a wish to return to this special landmark amongst family.

Process & Delivery

The brief described an imagery expressing our excitement and love for travel as we return to vacation planning. I chose to communicate that excitement through characters within a scene, referencing families and nostalgia.

I delivered two sketches that I thought communicated the best storytelling. The first being Ottawa and the second, Montreal.

For the Ottawa linear sketch, I wanted to portray a scene displaying two sisters reminiscing their past at a specific location. For this theme, I recalled to the beautiful scenic view behind the Canadian History of Museum; overseeing the Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Château Laurier. The background of their story is evolved from one of my own - a personal desire to return to the balconies of the Canadian History of Museum. To enhance the quality of nostalgia, I planned to use warm tones of contrasting colours to reflect the joyous summer memory .

Meanwhile, the Quebec City sketch showed the freedom of youth - reversing time back to our time as children. The children in the foreground expressing their joy of vacation as they chase though the parks of Rue Saint-Anne and Place D’Armes. The Auberge du Tresor was a befitting location for the background as I thought the vibrancy of the greens and reds on the building, along with the busy-ness of outdoor diners would bring a dynamic and energetic mood to the composition - further intensifying the excitement of the tourism.
